SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - It’s more expensive to live in Williston, North Dakota, than in Manhattan.
That’s one of the lessons Mayor Mike Huether learned during his visit to the oil boomtown.
Huether says Williston city government has to spend almost $1.5 million dollars to provide housing assistance to all 225 government workers in town. He says thats because oil wages are so high they drive up the cost of everything including housing.
Huether says Williston is lobbying the North Dakota legislature for another penny increase in the sales tax. He says half would go to counties and half would go to cities and towns.
Huether says that’s because oil wages and housing costs are so much higher.
