SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Sioux Falls police are routinely investigating fraud cases involving victims selling items online.
Sergeant Sean Kooistra says the most frequent scam involves buyers sending checks for more than the amount. He says the buyer instructs the seller to cash the check and send the extra money, along with the merchandise, back. It's only later that the seller learns the check is fraudulent and he or she is out the money and the item.
Kooistra says the next most common scam is the I-R-S calling resident's heist. The caller goes so far as to fix caller I-D to appear that the caller is from the federal government or a law enforcement agency.
The scammer warns the victim that payment to the tax agency is late and that if payment is not made immediately then police will make an arrest.
Kooistra says neither the I-R-S or law enforcement operate in that manner.
He says if you have any suspicions over phone calls that scare with warnings, call the Sioux Falls police.
