SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - In promoting the DRIVE Act, a transportation funding bill, Senator John Thune focused on regulatory reforms.
Thune says the Commerce section of the Act triples penalties the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration can impose on car makers for safety violation.
Thune says fines would go from $35 million to $105 million which he says would provide a much stronger deterrent against auto safety violation. He say in addition to targeting violations, a portion of the bill also addresses lapses at the Traffic Administration identified in the inspector general's report.
DRIVE reauthorizes transportation programs for six years and provides three years of guaranteed funding.
