SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Truth in Accounting says South Dakota’s taxpayer surplus, money available to pay future bills, is on firm financial footing.
Sheila Weinberg says South Dakota has overfunded its pension obligations by $260 million.
Weinberg says South Dakota owes $2.1 billion in bills; has $3.3 billion in assests; and has $1.2 billion in remaining available assests. When the remaining available assets are divided among the state's taxpayers, each individual's share is $4,000 - the state's Taxpayer Surplus.
Weinberg credits Governor Dennis Daugaard for being transparent with South Dakota's finances.
She says the surplus classifies South Dakota as a Sunshine State and is ranked fifth out of only eleven such states.
