Phone scams are ramping up this fall

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The IRS impersonation scam has returned this fall with a vengeance.

Jessie Schmidt with the Better Business Bureau says there are hundreds of thousands of fake calls coming into the service area.  Schmidt says her office fields at least 60 phone calls a day on IRS calls.

She says the IRS never contacts taxpayers by phone, text or email.

In a phone scam twist, callers tell the victim the government will send money but they first must send a money order.

Officer Sam Clemens says the off-shore scammers use caller I-D's that look official.

Clemens says a Sioux Falls man lost almost three-hundred dollars earlier this week.
