Sioux Falls, SD (KELO-AM) A new city administrative building for Sioux Falls will cost $21.9 million, but city officials say the new space will be needed to provide services to the city's ever-growing population. They say the current city hall building can't be stretched to handle the future.
City Council on Tuesday received a project update. Council would have to approve a bond issue to cover the cost of constructing the new building on Dakota Avenue downtown across the street from the Library.
A city problem child - Van Eps Park - next door will be included in the vision. Architect Jeff Hazard says new green space a part of the project will expand the park.
City Finance Director Tracy Turbak says that the bond issue would still keep the City's per capita debt very low compared to similar-sized communities such as Fargo and Lincoln. Councilor Dean Karsky wondered if leasing office space wouldn't be better than building. Turback said that leasing would be more expensive in the long term.
