Congress misses self-imposed budget deadline today

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - House Republicans will miss today's deadline to pass a budget but House and Senate Appropriations committees will work next week on spending.

Senator John Thune says they'll call-up individual appropriation measures and mark them up at the top-line number agreed to last year.

Thune says the Senate can move forward with the appropriations process without having passed a budget resolution.  Hopefully, he says, as the Senate moves bills they can be sent to the House.

Thune says its time to overhaul the budget process.  He's not talking about tweaking it or making incremental changes, he's suggesting throwing the whole effort overboard.

There appears to be trouble on the House floor where only a handful measures have enough support for passage.
