SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) -The Storm Prediction Center expects severe weather in the southeastern United States today and tonight but the threat of tornadoes is looking less likely.

Sioux Falls meteorologist Todd Heitkamp says it still emphasizes the need for northern plains residents to prepare during severe weather awareness week.

Heitkamp says it's just a matter of time before severe weather starts moving further to the north and we need to be prepared.  But he says it will be another night of active weather to the south.

Heitkamp says our rain and snow is at the northern edge of the system.

He says there will be widespread rain of 1 1/2 to 2 inches of rain across the tri-state area and maybe even higher amounts in extreme southern South Dakota.  The rain will gradually end tomorrow.  1 to 3 inches of snow is forecast tonight west river with the highest amounts in the Black Hills.

Heitkamp says more rain is in the forecast over the weekend.
