SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The Minnehaha County Commission today approved a drainage permit near diminutive Diamond Lake in the northwest corner of the county.
One of the lake's more famous neighbors spoke in favor of the project.
Mayor Mike Huether owns property around the lake. Huether says the lake is 250 acres in size and is normally 8 to 12 feet deep.
But Huether says over the last five years the lake has dropped 4 to 6 feet. He says there was also a major fish kill in the lake over a harsh winter. He says it's been difficult getting fish and water back into Diamond.
Huether say some of the tile will drain directly into the lake. So he says common sense would dictate that that will increase the flow and capacity into the lake. He also admitted, however, the water quality may not be of the highest caliber because of extra nitrates.
No one spoke in opposition to the plan and it passed the commission unanimously.
