SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Saturday marks the 24th anniversary of one of America's great days of giving--the National Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.
Sioux Falls carrier Eric Stone says donations go directly to local food pantries to provide to people in need and there are many in Sioux Falls who need our help.
He says last year's food drive netted 86,000 pounds of food and the Sioux Falls Food Pantry distributes 70,000 pounds of food every month.
Jennifer Stensaas with Feeding South Dakota encourages residents to leave non-perishable food near your mailbox. Stensaas says the pantry has a great need for cereal but residents can donate cans of soup, tuna, vegetables, fruit or pasta and baby food.
In South Dakota one in eight residents are food insecure. Children in these homes feel hunger's impact on their overall health and ability to perform in school.
Nationally last year, carriers collected over 72 million pounds of food.
