SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - If you're paying respects to veterans this weekend by making a donation the Better Business Bureau advises doing some research before giving.
Jessie Schmidt says to look for a clear description of how veterans are helped and ask how funds cover the charity's cost and how much goes to vets.
Schmidt says to watch for name confusion because many veterans charitie include the same words in different order.
Telemarketing can be expensive so ask for information on the charity's programs and finances. Don't be pressure to make an immediate on-the-spot donation. Charities should welcome your gift whenever you want to send it.
Schmidt says to check with the B-B-B's give-dot-org site and consider donating locally to the VFW or American Legion. You can also look for charities that accept donations of used clothing and other goods.
She says donation requests by veterans groups are high around the Memorial Day holiday.
