SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - It's National Gun Violence Awareness Day, and several groups, including Everytown for Gun Safety, are taking a cue from hunters wearing orange.
Kristi McLaughlin with the South Dakota Peace and Justice Center, argues the state's gun violence needs a combination of solutions.
She advocates better background checks. She says the lack of restrictions contributes to people getting guns who shouldn't have them.
McLaughlin says while she supports tougher background checks, the idea must be balanced with lawful gun owner's rights.
She says the organization support the public's right to own guns and to hunt. But she adds that they don't support people who shouldn't have guns having access to them.
The National Rifle Association calls the wear orange event a "thinly veiled anti-gun stunt."
According to the latest numbers from the Center for American Progress, from 2002 to 2011, nearly 730 people were killed by gun violence in South Dakota
