SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Beginning Monday, West 41st Street will be closed from Ellis Road to east of Grinnel Avenue.

City Engineer Chad Huwe says the $8.5 million project will widened 41st to four lanes.  The detours include 26th and 57th Streets.  Access to businesses and homes on 41st will be available.

Huwe says West 41st should be completed in November.

While the Sioux Falls road construction season begins on West 41st Street on Monday, there are other several major projects this year.

Engineer Brad Ludens says the Russell Street project should be done in October.  Crew worked on the westbound streets last sumer and will shift to the eastbaound streets this year.

Ludens says 10th and Sycamore will be reconstructed, 12th Street from Carolyn to Kiwanis Avenues will undergo concrete joint repairs and Second Avenue from 10th to 11th Streets will also be reconstructed.

The bigger Sioux Falls street projects get most of the attention but maintenance of good roads is important too.

City Engineer Wes Philips says it’s less expensive to keep streets in good condition than it is to reconstruct them.  Philips says the city will spend three million dollars on asphalt mill and overlay, covering over 270 blocks this year.
