(KELO AM) - South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley will be in Brookings Wednesday to speak to pharmacy students and faculty at South Dakota State University.His 2 p.m. talk will be in the University Student Union's Volstorff Ballroom and is open to the public. There is no admission fee.The chief law enforcement officer and legal adviser for the State of South Dakota is the keynote speaker at the college's annual Spring Convocation and Awards Program.
While a leader from the pharmaceutical field typically gives the address, Dan Hansen, assistant dean of students for the college, said Jackley is an appropriate guest because drug diversion has been one of his focuses as attorney general. "That's a hot topic in pharmacy right now. It's good to get him in front of our students because they're going to be on the front lines for preventing drug diversion," Hansen said.Drug diversion is the use of prescription drugs for recreational purposes, and can include illegal prescriptions, theft or the sale of pills by a valid prescription holder to someone without a prescription. Jackley's topic is "Drug Diversion in the State of South Dakota."This past winter, Jackley also championed a bill through the state Legislature that established maintaining electronic records for the sale of cold medicine to mitigate methamphetamine production. Retailers selling cold and allergy medications with particular ingredients will be required to enter customer information into a tracking system.Jackley said the policy can prevent the illegal purchase of ingredients necessary for meth production while respecting customer privacy.Jackley was sworn in as the 30th attorney general for South Dakota Sept. 4, 2009, filling a vacancy created when Larry Long stepped down to become a circuit court judge. Jackley went on to receive the endorsements of 65 of 66 South Dakota states attorneys and handily won his own term in 2010.In 2006, Jackley was appointed U.S. attorney for South Dakota by President George W. Bush and unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
