Sioux Falls, SD (KELO AM) - Drivers should leave 15 minutes early Monday morning. Construction will begin on Monday, April 14, 2014, for three major road improvement projects in Sioux Falls.
The City of Sioux Falls is collaborating with the South Dakota Department of Transportation (DOT) on two projects that will begin work on Monday. The intersection of 10th Street and Sycamore Avenue will be reconstructed, adding right turn lanes and dual left turn lanes in all directions. On Monday, work will begin on the south side of Arrowhead Parkway (10th Street) and east side of Sycamore Avenue. One lane of traffic will be maintained in all directions during this phase on the north side of 10th Street and west side of Sycamore Avenue. To make the intersection safer and operate more efficiently, $2.8 million will be invested. After these improvements are complete, the City anticipates a 36 percent reduction in the delay experienced by the 34,850 vehicles that travel through this intersection each day. The project has a completion date of October 3, 2014, and the prime contractor is T & R Contracting, Inc. of Sioux Falls.
Another joint City/DOT project is the second year of Russell Street improvements. The eastbound lanes of Russell Street from Westport Avenue to Minnesota Avenue will begin being reconstructed on Monday, April 14. To accomplish the first phase of the work, the south half of the Kiwanis Avenue and Russell Street intersection will be closed, and two-way traffic from Westport Avenue to West Avenue will be placed in the westbound lanes of Russell Street. Kiwanis Avenue at Russell Street will be closed for about 45 days. Traffic will be directed to use Louise Avenue, Madison Street, and Western Avenue while the intersection is closed. The interim completion date for the eastbound lanes of Russell Street from Westport Avenue to West Avenue is August 15. The overall completion date is November 21, 2014. The prime contractor on this $18.7 million project is T & R Contracting, Inc. of Sioux Falls.
Also on Monday, April 14, concrete repairs will begin on West 12th Street from Carolyn Avenue to Kiwanis Avenue. The first phase of work will begin on the outside eastbound lanes at Carolyn Avenue and proceed toward Kiwanis Avenue. The second phase of work will be in the westbound outside lanes. Lanes will be closed for the repairs, but traffic will be maintained in both directions at all times. To better accommodate peak flows, two lanes will be open in the peak direction during the morning and evening commutes. Completion is within 75 working days and by November 1. The prime contractor on this $933,000 project is Smith & Smith Construction, Inc. of Sioux Falls.
Traffic delays are to be expected for all three projects. Motorists are urged to use caution and reduced speeds in the construction areas and may want to consider alternate routes.
